IOI Online Contest

It was just announced today that this year's IOI problems will be available online an hour after the real contest and you can have a bash at them as well as submit solutions. So if you're keen on getting a taste of some of the action I will be getting (albeit as coach, not contestant), be sure to free yourself next week Friday 17th and Sunday 19th.

The contest will be hosted at http://evaluator.hsin.hr/. It should be interesting to see how the now experienced ex-contestants such as Bruce Merry can do against the youngsters. Unfortunately as I will be on site I won't be able to take part in the online contest, however I'll see the problems the evening before so I'll most certainly give them a bash on paper (or in my head).

  1. Talk about IOI, you might have heard that our hostel burnt down today..
Dirk-B said his LCD seems borked and I have yet to hear if Ralf's pc survived :P

  2. Yes, I heard from Ralf that you guys stayed there. Are you covered by insurance? At least there weren't many injuries (I've heard there were two).

  3. I don't know about Dirk-B or Ralf, but the water and/or smoke didn't get to anything in my room.

Injuries - yes we can consider ourselves lucky, and on top of that only the 3rd floor burnt down.

But the worst injury was very serious though - the guy broke his back and might be disabled for the rest of his life. Another guy slept in the smoke for half an hour - I'm not sure if that might have repercussions later

  4. Ooh dear, didn't realise the injury was that bad! Hope they both recover.

Just heard from Dirk that his pc was hosed, but survived.

  5. It's no suprise, because they didn't disclose the information about the injury publicly. TV news and Die Burger didn't mention anything about it.

  6. Ok, someone just forwarded me this article from IOL

Potgieter sustained minor burn wounds and seriously injured his back. He is in a critical condition in the Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic ICU. His doctor, Theunis Potgieter, said he had not been operated on yet, but had been referred to a neurosurgeon. It is uncertain whether he will be able to walk again.

  7. It must be a huge shock for you guys! I can't even begin to grasp what it must be like. Did you know that person that was injured?

    I see that article says:

"The university had the building insured, but insurance of personal items was the students' responsibility."

So it could be a rough time for those who lost valuable items.

  8. Indeed. It's hard to come to terms with the fact that we can't go back to our home. Another thing is that now everyone will be scattered across campus, and I guess at least half of them won't eventually return to Eendrag either because they've graduated or would be settled in wherever they are living privately.

I'm sure the accomodation issue is going to be an administrative nightmare, and I fear the worst case scenario where I'm nowhere near my friends, far from the faculty and without a network point. I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Oh, and back to your question, I talked to Izak from time to time, but didn't know him well though.
